CHAPTER TEN

“Guess what I just saw in Rita’s room,” I whispered. Everyone else was downstairs, so whispering wasn’t really necessary, but it seemed like such a big secret at this point.

Andrea stopped writing in her notebook. “A Frida Kahlo painting.”

“Darn! I should have known you’d know! When did you see it?”

“I peeked in there yesterday.”

“I guess Ellie must have had a lot of money at one time,” I said.

“Charlie undoubtedly had a good salary at the plant.”

“So what’s the plan…about these paintings?”

Andrea put her notebook and pen back in her purse. “I don’t know. I’m still thinking we should talk the situation over with Jack. I think we can trust him, and I don’t know what else to do.”

“You don’t think we should bring Tom into the loop?”

“Maybe after we talk to Jack. I wish I could see a clear path ahead about the paintings. I don’t think Ellie and Rita will need so much money now that Tom’s back in their lives, so that makes a difference.”

“Now that Tom’s involved, do you think we should continue staying here?”

“It seems like the best place for investigating Charlie’s murder, so I think we should stay on a while,” Andrea said.

Rita called up the stairs at this point, telling us to come to lunch. “We must give her some money for groceries,” I said.

“I gave her some yesterday.”

We went downstairs and had sandwiches, and just as we were finishing, Sara showed up. Rita invited her to have coffee and a cookie, and she sat down with us. “I’ve been talking with the sheriff about starting a Neighborhood Watch,” she said.

“I think that’s an excellent idea,” Tom said.

“We’re going to meet at my house Saturday at 2 p.m. with a deputy who’ll help us understand what’s involved.”

“Good timing,” Tom said. “I need to go to Parkersburg to get some things wrapped up in my office, but I can be back by Saturday.”

I thought it sounded as if he might be planning to give up his practice in Parkersburg. Maybe he’d be moving in with Ellie and Rita so he could really look after things.

I didn’t say anything since we were only visitors in the neighborhood, but Andrea did. “Even though we don’t live here, I’d like to attend that,” Andrea said.

“By all means,” Sara said. “I’m counting on it.”

She was a good neighbor, in spite of her proclivity for gossip, I thought. Had she ever been on our list of suspects for the necklace theft or Charlie’s murder? I didn’t think so, and there was no reason for her to be there now.

“Let us know if we can do anything,” I said.

“There’s really nothing that needs to be done. I’m making up flyers that I’ll hand out.”

Not only was she a good neighbor, but she knew how to make flyers. I was impressed, but then I’m easily impressed by anyone with technical skills. We helped Rita clean up the kitchen and took Rosy out to the backyard.

“We need to go upstairs and make a list of our suspects,” Andrea said.
