CHAPTER TEN
âGuess what I just saw in Ritaâs room,â I whispered. Everyone else was downstairs, so whispering wasnât really necessary, but it seemed like such a big secret at this point.
Andrea stopped writing in her notebook. âA Frida Kahlo painting.â
âDarn! I should have known youâd know! When did you see it?â
âI peeked in there yesterday.â
âI guess Ellie must have had a lot of money at one time,â I said.
âCharlie undoubtedly had a good salary at the plant.â
âSo whatâs the planâ¦about these paintings?â
Andrea put her notebook and pen back in her purse. âI donât know. Iâm still thinking we should talk the situation over with Jack. I think we can trust him, and I donât know what else to do.â
âYou donât think we should bring Tom into the loop?â
âMaybe after we talk to Jack. I wish I could see a clear path ahead about the paintings. I donât think Ellie and Rita will need so much money now that Tomâs back in their lives, so that makes a difference.â
âNow that Tomâs involved, do you think we should continue staying here?â
âIt seems like the best place for investigating Charlieâs murder, so I think we should stay on a while,â Andrea said.
Rita called up the stairs at this point, telling us to come to lunch. âWe must give her some money for groceries,â I said.
âI gave her some yesterday.â
We went downstairs and had sandwiches, and just as we were finishing, Sara showed up. Rita invited her to have coffee and a cookie, and she sat down with us. âIâve been talking with the sheriff about starting a Neighborhood Watch,â she said.
âI think thatâs an excellent idea,â Tom said.
âWeâre going to meet at my house Saturday at 2 p.m. with a deputy whoâll help us understand whatâs involved.â
âGood timing,â Tom said. âI need to go to Parkersburg to get some things wrapped up in my office, but I can be back by Saturday.â
I thought it sounded as if he might be planning to give up his practice in Parkersburg. Maybe heâd be moving in with Ellie and Rita so he could really look after things.
I didnât say anything since we were only visitors in the neighborhood, but Andrea did. âEven though we donât live here, Iâd like to attend that,â Andrea said.
âBy all means,â Sara said. âIâm counting on it.â
She was a good neighbor, in spite of her proclivity for gossip, I thought. Had she ever been on our list of suspects for the necklace theft or Charlieâs murder? I didnât think so, and there was no reason for her to be there now.
âLet us know if we can do anything,â I said.
âThereâs really nothing that needs to be done. Iâm making up flyers that Iâll hand out.â
Not only was she a good neighbor, but she knew how to make flyers. I was impressed, but then Iâm easily impressed by anyone with technical skills. We helped Rita clean up the kitchen and took Rosy out to the backyard.
âWe need to go upstairs and make a list of our suspects,â Andrea said.
